This September 1st, Kellie Thiessen, PhD, RM, RN, started as UBC Midwifery’s new director. Dr. Thiessen comes to us after directing the Midwifery Education Program at the University of Manitoba.
Dr. Thiessen is a Midwife Clinician Scientist with an extensive clinical background in maternal/child health; she is a registered midwife and a registered nurse.
For the last ten years she has led the development and has been the Director of the inaugural Bachelor of Midwifery program at the University of Manitoba. During this time, Dr. Thiessen was appointed Senior Specialist in Maternal Health and Midwifery, Institute for Global Public Health, University of Manitoba. She has worked as a midwife in the United States, Brazilian, and Canadian health care systems and is committed to developing innovative collaborative models of midwifery practice.
Dr. Thiessen is funded by the CIHR and was a recipient of the Career Development Award from the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program (CCHCSP) from 2017-2020.
We are very excited to have Dr. Kellie join UBC and to continue the work of growing the Midwifery profession in British Columbia and Canada.
