Policy and Procedure Statements
Preamble. The University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Midwifery Program (BMw) and its Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP) are jointly referred to as “UBC Midwifery” or the “Program”. UBC Midwifery follows all UBC regulatory requirements.
Policy
All students in clinical placements are required to complete the following standardized courses based on timelines identified in the corresponding courses offered through UBC Midwifery. There are no exceptions to this policy.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR-BLS)
Students are responsible for completing Standardized Clinical Training Courses according to the BCCNM Continuing Competencies Policy, prior to beginning placements in years 2, 3 and 4. Please review this policy for accepted courses and minimum course requirements. Students are required to find and take a course in the community to maintain this competency. Students will be asked to show proof of completion and currency before beginning placements along with their SPECO requirements.
Midwifery Emergency Skills Program (MESP)
Requirements will be met during intensives, 1, including completion in years 3 and 4.2
Fetal Health Surveillance (FHS)
Requirements will be met during intensives, 1, including completion in years 3 and 4.2
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
Requirements will be met during intensives1, including completion in years 3 and 4.2
1 Workshop components only will be held during the intensives. Students are responsible for completing online components prior to intensives, as outlined in the annually released Fall Prep letters.
2Annual completion of MESP, FHS and NRP is required in Years 3 and 4. Students who are unable to attain completion during the workshop sessions in intensives will be required to attain completion in the community, prior to beginning placement or as soon as possible thereafter. The student must notify the Course Lead of the course they plan to attend. Any cost associated with this will be assumed by the student.
Non-Compliance with the Standardized Course Requirements Policy: Failure to successfully complete and maintain currency in each standardized course will result in a delay in the student’s education trajectory. A student will not be allowed to begin the assigned clinical placement course without successful completion of each standardized course, or a plan in place to do so, as discussed with the Course Lead.
