The UBC Midwifery Program was delighted to welcome our incoming cohort of students at orientation this September.
The day began in the beautiful setting of the UBC Farm with the xʷc̓ic̓əsəm Garden Opening Ceremony, led by Elders Dr. Roberta Price , Alannah Young, and Fekre Yohannes Mulugeta. Morning activities continued with Sky Woman, an Indigenous story shared by Rayann Big Plume-Harris.
Students then gathered for program introductions. Dr. Cecilia Jevitt, Program Director, shared a warm welcome and reflections on the program and UBC. Associate Director Allison Campbell led a program overview and earlier introductions to the students, while faculty leads and staff introduced themselves before joining in the “Invitation to Midwifery”.
We were honoured to be joined by Professor Joseph Anthony, Associate Dean of Health Professions, and James Andrew, Associate Director of Indigenous Initiatives, who both shared their words of encouragement and support.
Community-building continued with cohort introductions facilitated by Student Services Manager Aisha Sallad, followed by a spirited welcome from the Midwifery Student Association (MSA). To commemorate the day, students also enjoyed professional headshots taken by the UBC photographer.
Orientation is always a special day. It marks the beginning of each student’s journey into midwifery education, grounded in community, collaboration, and respect. We are excited to see the Class of 2029 grow and thrive as they embark on their studies and begin this transformative path.
