Policy and Procedure Statements
Preamble. The University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Midwifery Program (BMw) and its Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP) are jointly referred to as “UBC Midwifery” or the “Program”. UBC Midwifery follows all UBC regulatory requirements and applicable UBC policies.
Policy
The UBC Midwifery Program adheres to the UBC Attendance Policy. Students are expected to display a high academic and professional standard of conduct by punctual attendance in all MIDW courses including lectures, laboratories, workshops, intensives, placements, and tutorials.
Students who are unavoidably absent from classes because of illness or disability should report to their instructors as soon as possible. Any request for academic concession must be clearly expressed as soon as it is known (see Academic Concession).
Attendance is required in all MIDW courses. Students are responsible for arranging their schedules in consultation with their preceptors and team, and for communicating any variances (anticipated lateness or inability to attend clinic or call due to extenuating circumstances), in advance. Any unplanned absences/lateness should be immediately communicated to the course lead by the student.
Attendance in all aspects of clinical placements is required and necessitates professional accountability with the preceptor and clinical team.
Procedure. Students must attend courses as scheduled and follow the time-off requirements as noted in the Taking Call and Working Schedule [link document]. As a rule, students must not miss class to attend a birth. A student lacking birth numbers or specific clinical experiences, such as homebirth attendance, should highlight this to the Tutor at the beginning of the term. In this case, the Tutor may make an exception to allow the student to miss class to prioritize needed experiences only.
Non-Compliance with the Attendance Policy: A Course Lead may a) withhold participation marks or b) initiate procedures to exclude a student from examinations when students have multiple unexcused absences, or where there is no documented accommodation from the Centre for Accessibility.
