REACT is UBC Midwifery’s faculty-led committee that develops recommendations and implements initiatives to advance racial justice and decolonize midwifery education. Focusing on uplifting Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour (IBPOC) voices, REACT is committed to transforming the program into a more inclusive and equitable space.
REACT represents our commitment to addressing systemic inequities in healthcare and education. This collective works to promote racial equity within the midwifery profession through advocacy, education, and meaningful action. By fostering dialogue and implementing strategies that prioritize inclusion and justice, R.E.A.C.T. helps ensure a more equitable future for all.
REACT addresses systemic racism, promotes anti-racist and anti-colonial practices, and ensures the curriculum reflects diverse perspectives. The work is grounded in listening to IBPOC experiences and identifying barriers to equity within the program.

Why REACT Matters
Midwifery carries deep roots in community care but also has a history tied to colonial and racist ideologies. REACT addresses these challenges by breaking down barriers for IBPOC students, staff, and faculty, ensuring midwifery at UBC reflects equity and justice in every aspect.
What REACT Does
REACT develops recommendations and implements initiatives in the following areas:
- Social Justice and Anti-Racism: Advocating for systemic changes to dismantle oppressive structures.
- Decolonization Processes: Promoting the integration of Indigenous knowledge and practices.
- Curriculum Practices: Ensuring the curriculum reflects diverse perspectives and anti-racist principles.
- The committee also works to develop and execute a strategic plan to achieve these goals.
How REACT Works
REACT is driven by a diverse membership composed of Indigenous and racialized voices. The committee operates on consensus, inviting external experts when needed, and meets regularly to drive actionable change.
Looking Ahead
REACT is more than just a committee—it’s a movement toward a fairer, more inclusive midwifery future. Through its commitment to equity and decolonization, REACT is supporting the program in its vision to uplift and support all members of its community.
