Elaine was the founding Director of the Midwifery Program at UBC. She was a teacher, colleague, mentor and friend to many of us over her initial five-year term as Director and as Interim Director. Elaine was also inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, at this time, the only midwife honoured with this fellowship.
We are fortunate to have benefitted from her tremendous vision and leadership over the years of her involvement with the program.
See the CMHF’s fantastic tribute to Elaine, describing her many contributions to the professionalization of midwifery in BC, along with a timeline of her career and contributions here: https://www.cdnmedhall.ca/laureates/elainecarty.
In keeping with Elaine’s commitment to midwifery education at UBC, the Cartys have recently made a five-year gift to support the establishment of the Elaine Carty Visiting Scholars Initiative. The initiative will bring established international clinicians or researchers to UBC to meet with our students, deliver a seminar to our faculty, and present a public lecture to our midwifery community. It’s an exciting initiative, and I am grateful to Elaine for her continued vision and support of the Midwifery Program.
Elaine’s leadership in advancing the regulation of midwifery and developing the UBC Midwifery Program have helped to change the face of obstetrical care in this province and ultimately improve the health of expectant mothers and children. I am so proud to be able to share with you the news of this initiative in her name, and I look forward to connecting with you over the course of our first Scholar’s visit!
