Philanthropy plays an important role in advancing the UBC Midwifery Program’s mission to educate skilled midwives and to promote excellence in maternal and newborn care. Your contributions to initiatives such as the Global Placement Fund, the Jean Cooper Bursary, the Elaine Carty Visiting Scholar’s Initiative Fund, and the Carol Hird Memorial Award, help grow the future of midwifery and ensure equitable, high-quality care for all.
At the University of British Columbia (UBC), the terms “bursary”, “fund”, and “memorial” have specific meanings:
- Bursary: A bursary is a form of financial aid provided to students based on demonstrated financial need. It is designed to assist students in covering educational expenses and does not require repayment. Bursaries help ensure that financial barriers do not impede students’ access to education.
- Fund: A fund at UBC refers to a financial resource (where donations are kept) established to support a specific purpose, such as scholarships, research, faculty positions, or program initiatives. Funds can be endowed, where the principal amount is invested, and the generated income is used annually to support the designated purpose, creating a lasting legacy. Alternatively, funds can be non-endowed, allowing the entire contribution to be utilized immediately.
- Memoriam: A memorial page we would set up for any family who requests it and wishes to raise money for a UBC cause when their loved one passes away. The donations from the memorial page would go into the memorial fund named after the deceased.
