Virtual International Day of the Midwife!
Starting on May 5th at 3 PM New Zealand time, a group of volunteer midwives and communications technologists present 24 hours of free, online news and education about midwifery and birth. UBC Midwifery at International Labour & Birth Conference
UBC Midwifery’s research and education were a prominent presence at this meeting. Four midwifery faculty members presented their work at the International Labour and Birth Conference in Grange Over Sand, England, April 24-26. International Day of the Midwife 2023!
Today we celebrate midwives! With midwifery being legal in British Columbia for roughly 25 years (29 federally), there is much cause for celebration and motivation for lifting the profession with all of the milestones reached. Excitingly, for the first time since 2019, the International Confederation of Midwives is hosting its annual ICM conference this year

Midwifery, Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
In December 2023, UNESCO inscribed “Midwifery: knowledge, skills and practices” onto its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognition underscores the universal significance of midwifery across diverse cultures.
