All individuals who apply to the Midwifery Program must first submit an application to UBC and meet the basic UBC entrance requirements as well as meet the minimum grade point average as defined by the UBC Calendar. The Midwifery program will not consider any applications from those who do not meet the UBC entrance requirements.

All UBC applications are assessed by Enrollment Services based on the applicant’s educational history. All applicants who have 24 or more transferable, post secondary credits will have their GPA calculated by their post secondary work. For those who have completed more than 24 credits, Admissions Services will look at the most recently completed 30 Credits from a person’s undergraduate education. Applicants who have started or completed a Masters degree will still be assessed by their most recent 30 credits from their undergraduate work.

Applicants with fewer than 24 transferable post-secondary credits will have their GPA determined using a combination of any post-secondary work, as well as their high school performance, and applicants will need to submit these transcripts for review by Admissions Services when applying. All applicants must have successfully completed high school to be granted entrance to the university. Below is the general admission requirements for all Canadian high school students applying to UBC’s Vancouver campus:

  • English 11 plus a language 11
  • Mathematics 11
  • An approved Science 11 course (Chemistry is recommended for Midwifery program applicants)
  • An approved Social Studies course
  • English 12 or English 12 First Peoples
  • Three other approved Grade 12 courses (Math 12 recommended for Midwifery program applicants)

Support for Aboriginal Midwifery Students at UBC

The UBC Midwifery Program reserves selected seats for qualifying aboriginal students each year. Students may self-identify as Aboriginal on their university application or by separate contact. UBC Midwifery has established a committee for Aboriginal, Rural and Remote Education with a mandate of developing core curricula, clinical placement opportunities, mentors, and a database of university resources to support Aboriginal midwifery students at UBC and externally.

Prerequisite Requirements for the Midwifery Program

Each applicant is required to complete the following pre-requisite courses:

  • UBC’s BIOL 153 – Anatomy and Physiology or an approved equivalent (7 Credits) (*This course is offered in two parts and both parts must be completed in order to meet this requirement)
  • UBC’s ENGL 112 – Strategies for University Writing or an approved equivalent (3 Credits)

To locate an equivalent course, search the BC Transfer Guide by Receiving Institution (UBC-Vancouver Campus). Please refer to the attached list for suggested equivalent courses at other BC institutions for both the BIOL 153 and ENGL 112 pre-requisite requirement.

Applicants from outside British Columbia who wish to have courses assessed for equivalency should contact the Admissions Coordinator for further instruction.

Transfer Credit

Enrollment Services will determine the amount of transfer credits awarded at the time of admission. Applicants should consult the BC Transfer Guide before applying to the Program to determine which courses are recognized by UBC. If applicants have any questions regarding courses that transfer to UBC, they should consult the BC Transfer Guide, Enrollment Services or the Student Services/Admissions Coordinator for more information.
