Message from the Director

Elaine CartyWelcome to the Midwifery Program in the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia (UBC). We are excited that you are considering studies in our Midwifery Program, and hope that you will take the time to look at our website. Of course, we also hope that you will contact us directly if you would like further information about the Program or its curriculum.

Midwifery is a rewarding profession that provides career opportunities in a variety of environments. In Canada, preparation for practice normally takes the form of an undergraduate degree in midwifery. At UBC, the four-year degree (Bachelor of Midwifery, or BMW), prepares graduates to write the Canadian Midwifery Registration Examination (CMRE) and thereafter to licensure in British Columbia.

The Midwifery Program at UBC has been preparing midwives for over a decade. Offered on a full-time basis, it provides a relevant and high quality educational experience that allows graduates to enter directly to practice following licensure. Our graduates are working as midwives across all settings in British Columbia and across Canada. Additionally, many graduates are also preceptors and clinical faculty in our program, supporting the education of our exceptional students.

Our faculty are accomplished clinicians with additional expertise in research, social justice issues, the humanities and international health. I invite you to look at the research and service activities of our faculty.

If you are interested in an academic experience that will prepare you for a stimulating professional career working on behalf of women and their families, I encourage you to consider our program.

On behalf of the faculty and students of the UBC Midwifery Program, I welcome your interest and questions. Please direct inquiries here.
